World Asthma Day 2018 falls on May 1. The day is a collaborative effort of Global Initiative for Asthma and World Health Organisation. This year marks the 20th annual World Asthma Day, a day dedicated to raise awareness about asthma and mobilize health organizations to work collectively towards preventing the disease.
Asthma is a chronic disease involving the airways in the lungs. These airways, or bronchial tubes, allow air to come in and out of the lungs. Asthma is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Environmental factors include exposure to air pollution and allergens. In 2013, 242 million people globally had asthma up from 183 million in 1990. It caused about 489,000 deaths in 2013, most of which occurred in the developing world. Coughing from asthma often is worse at night or early in the morning, making it hard to sleep.
