A job in travel and tourism management can be an exciting career path if you enjoy travel. Working in this field gives you insight into exciting travel opportunities and access to deals that might not be available to the average person. Positions include everything from travel agents to marketing roles international tourism departments. These jobs do tend to fluctuate with the economy, since people do tend to travel less during periods of recession or unemployment. However, the travel industry does expect some growth through 2014, so careers in this field are promising.
Travel Agent
If you are good with logistics and enjoy making travel plans, then a career as a travel agent may be a good fit. Many people either lack the skill or time to arrange travel experiences for themselves, as a travel agent, you would help them book their travel, and can usually offer information discounts that the average person can't access. As an independent travel agent you have some flexibility in your schedule and work hours. A degree is not required, but some experience in the field will provide better opportunities.
Tourism Market Manager
A market manager working in travel tourism often works for a government or municipality. Workers in these positions are responsible for promoting specific destinations within various countries, states or cities.
Travel Guide
A travel guide is a destination expert who shares his personal knowledge with tourists. Many destinations are better experienced with a local guide who can provide you with information that would be difficult to obtain on your own. For example, if you are hiking a remote volcano in Hawaii or visiting monuments in Washington D.C., your experience will be enhanced with the guidance of a local who has in-depth knowledge of the area.
