Dr Moitra, the lead researcher involved in the study was quoted as saying:
"Our results suggest there's a link between preferred sleep time, and asthma and allergies in teenagers. We can't be certain that staying up late is causing asthma, but we know that the sleep hormone melatonin is often out of sync in late-sleepers and that could, in turn, be influencing teenagers allergic response."
Sleep apnea, another trigger for disturbed sleep, which causes breathing trouble is also linked to nighttime asthma in children as well as adults. Apart from this, a host of factors like exposure to certain allergens, coolants in the room (bad air), difficult sleeping position and pre-existing hormonal trouble could add to asthma risk or make it worse at night.
An earlier study done on thousands of teenagers sleep habits also drew up a link between sleeping late and an increased risk of developing depression and other related mood disorders.
