The Haunted Isle of Poveglia
Located between Lido and Venice, in the Venetian Lagoon, is the isle Poveglia. The island itself has primarily been used, for hundreds of years, for the purpose of isolating those who are sick and diseased, or those who were basically excommunicated from social life for one reason or another. When the Bubonic Plague struck in the 14th century the island became strictly a colony for the quarantine of the sick, and many who were mistaken for dead were burned alive in heaps near the heart of the island. This happened again during the Black Death outbreak of the 17th century.
