When the researchers tested the swine flu virus (IAV) and SARS-CoV-2, it was found that the four herbal substances inactivated more than 99% of IAV after just 5 minutes. Chokeberry juice inactivated about 97 per cent of SARS-CoV-2 after 5 minutes, while green tea and pomegranate juice inactivated about 80 per cent of the virus. Elderberry juice had no effect on SARS-CoV-2. SARS-CoV-2 was more resistant than other pathogens, although chokeberry juice was quite effective, with pomegranate juice and green tea also reducing virus amounts.
Researchers believe that these natural and herbal products can prevent COVID-19 and other infections because of their acidic pH, which is known to inactivate viruses. They also contain polyphenols such as catechins, tannins, and flavonoids, which can affect viral proteins.
These products are commonly used as food items and consumed for better health. However, they can also be used as oral rinses. These may also reduce the risk of side effects such as damage to teeth and gums, etc that are common with chemical and antiseptic oral rinses. Swallowing these is also safe, as compared to swallowing one of those antiseptic oral rinses. Gargling with tea, tea extracts and juices has been proven by various studies as an effective preventive technique for flu and viral infections. For COVID-19, people can use chokeberry, pomegranate juice, or green tea for rinsing their mouth.
Continued gargling and rinsing the mouth with juices and teas followed by swallowing could be an effective preventive strategy for SARS-CoV-2, write the authors. This technique may especially help people who are at high risk of infection - such as healthcare workers, elderly, and people with existing health conditions. Swallowing these products is also practical in situations like on planes, trains, and schools, apart from the general fact that they are healthy.
