She holds Honours degree in English and psychology. During her college days she used to play basketball for her college team. She even has completed her post-graduation in criminal psychology.
In 1996, Zinta met with a director at a friend's birthday party, and made her first commercial in Perk chocolates. Later, she was seen in the commercial ad of Liril soap, and other catalogues. In 1997, Zinta met Shekhar Kapoor in an audition where she had gone just to accompany her friend. As Kapoor saw her in an audition, he insisted her to become an actress. Zinta would have made her debut in Kapoor's "Tara Rum Pum" opposite to Hrithik Roshan, but the movie was cancelled. Zinta made her debut in Kundan Shah's "Kya Kehna", the movie wasn't released until 2000. Zinta's first release was Mani Ratnam's "Dil Se" (1998). In 1998, she played her very first leading role in "Soldier". Both movies helped her to grab the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.
