Heart It
Depression drains your energy, hope and drive, making it difficult to
do what you need to feel better. If you feel depressed, it's best to do
something about it depression doesn't just go away on its own. These
ideas may help boost your mood and fight depression.
Be happy
If
you actively choose to focus on the positive in the situation (even
when the negative is bogging you down), your serotonin levels naturally
increase - which is exactly what many antidepressants try to make
happen.
Exercise
Take a 15- to 30-minute brisk walk
every day or dance, jog or bike if you prefer. People who are depressed
may not feel much like being active. But make yourself do it anyway (ask
a friend to exercise with you if you need to be motivated). Once you
get in the exercise habit, it won't take long to notice a difference in
your mood.
Socialize with positive people
Notice how people who always
look on the bright side deal with challenges, even minor ones, like not
being able to find a parking space. Then consider how you would react
in the same situation. Even if you have to pretend, try to adopt their
optimism and persistence in the face of difficulty.
Find a new hobby
Find
a new hobby that will attract new people in your life, such as dancing,
cooking class, yoga or gym. Whatever your particular interest is, there
has to be some activity in this world you always wanted to try, but
never had time.
Laughter is the best medicine
Laughter
causes an endorphin release all by itself. Of course, if you are in the
depths of depression, this probably won't work all by itself, but
finding the humor in a bad situation can turn things around.
