A woman’s nutritional and overall health, before and during pregnancy,
influences the health of her developing baby. Eating well, combined with
taking a daily multivitamin with folic acid and iron, can give a woman
the nutrients she needs to feel good, have energy, and support a healthy
pregnancy.
1-Eat at least 150 g of fish each week. Fish contains omega-3 fats and other important nutrients.
2-Women who could become pregnant and those who are
pregnant should take a multivitamin containing 0.4 mg of folic acid
every day to decrease the risk of neural-tube defects.
3-Ensure that their multivitamin contains 16-20 mg of iron.
4-Pregnant and breastfeeding women need a few more
calories. For most women, this means an extra two or three Food Guide
Servings from any of the food groups each day in addition to their
recommended number of Food Guide Servings per day.
It doesn’t take much to get the extra 300 calories needed. A glass of
milk and a couple pieces of toast will be sufficient. Don’t get caught
in the trap thinking a lot more food needs to be consumed. Furthermore,
don’t be tricked with the myth that you are eating for two.
