Earrings come in many different types-studs, hoops, danglers, chandelier and clip-on. Studs and hoops typically have a backing made of metal or plastic to hold the earring in place, while danglers will hook into the hole and hang without a backing. Sling backs or fold backs are danglers which will have clasps that snap into place. Chandeliers and discs can be studs or danglers. Choose stud backing for earrings that are heavy and loop dangles for ones that are light. Heavier ones will need additional backing or a chain that goes over the ears.
