In line with Ms Glenn's comments, though, he did discover how unemployment cut divorce rates among college graduates during the recession. But foreclosures pushed divorce rates up in the same group.

Mr Cohen also calculated that, between 2009 and 2011, approximately 150,000 less divorces were filed than expected. For this reason Pew Research Center senior writer D'Vera Cohn told the Los Angeles Times: 'There is still a mystery.

It is enormously tempting to say that bad economic times made that happen, but this new paper concludes that the jury is still out.'
