To conduct the study which was published in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology, researchers analyzed abortion data from 54,911 procedures conducted in 2009-10, as well as the women's health care data for the six weeks following the abortion. They looked for any complications following the procedure, which were defined as 'receiving an abortion-related diagnosis or treatment at any source of care within six weeks after an abortion.' Major complications were categorized as those 'requiring hospital admission, surgery, or blood transfusion.'
