Monozygotic (identical) twins are of the same gender. Identical twins are formed from a single zygote. Identical twins can either be female (XX) or male (XY), not male and female. On the other hand, fraternal twins are formed from two different eggs, fertilized by two separate sperms. Thus, fraternal twins can either be two boys, two girls or one of each.
